Commenting on the issue, manager of the Redditch Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Moira Morris suggested that the festive period can exacerbate financial difficulties, the Redditch Standard reports.
She said: “With Christmas fast approaching it is always important to recognise problems early.”
By getting help, consumers can find solutions that are “realistic and workable”, Ms Morris added.
The Redditch CAB dealt with clients who had a combined total of £5 million worth of debt problems during the first six months of this financial year and it expects this to increase to £10 million by the end of March 2010.
Last month, Conservative MP for Wirral West Esther McVey suggested that the number of consumers struggling with debt problems may fall in future if people are given lessons in financial management while they are at school, the Wirral Globe reported.
